Because I had to rush to my office as soon as I came home yesterday, I asked my son to send the photograph yesterday itself. He says he has sent it.

Yes, I saw an issue of “ENLITE”, where one J.T. (I hope it is Ashoka mitran) has written a review of a tamil version of Elvin’s Autobiography.

I read your sum-up of tamil plays. It was provoking enough. I thought, however, that while it had promising start, it just ended without any substantial suggestion from you. But provocation itself is a contribution. Try to think of it & add some more of concrete suggestions.

தீபம் இதழில் அதன் நவம்பர் 1967 இதழில் “நல்ல நாடகாசிரியர் வேண்டும்” என்ற என் கட்டுரை பிரசுரமாகியிருந்தது. அதில் தி.ஜானகிராமன், பி.எஸ் ராமையா போன்றோர் சேவா ஸ்டேஜுக்காக எழுதிய நாடகங்களையும் நாடகமல்ல என்று எழுதியிருந்தேன். சென்னையில் இருந்த ஜானகிராமன் எழுதிய 4.12.67 கடிதம் இங்கு தரப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அதற்கு நான் 8.12.67 அன்று எழுதிய நீண்ட கடிதத்திற்கு பதிலாக ஜானகிராமன் எழுதிய 13.12.67 கடிதமும் கீழே தரப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.[/stextbox]

Dear Swaminathan,

I understand the whole gamut of your arguments for raising the quality of literature & plays. After all, I am not a play wright. My genre is something else & am not quite sure whether I will have the patience or aptitude towards blooming into a playwright. I am however of thinking of a set of two or three themes which I thought it will suit the medium better.

I understand your exhortation with regard to my writing to the Editors themselves. I hope I should do it. But one thing I must say. You are mistaken in your idea of my “standing” or “status”. It may sound high but it is intrinsically ineffective. Let me dare, however. You should have flattered or pulled legs!

The situation is desperate as far as things stand at present. It requires the consent of not some enlightened writers alone. For a quality theatre something else is needed in a flamboyant, dedicated person. I am reminded of a person like Yukio Mishima, whos is not only a first rate writer but also a wrestler, painter, an entertainer & some other dashing things put into one. At least, we require a lesser Mishima.

You might not have like my yesterday’s letter. I don’t know what else I would have written. Amma vandaal -everything in it is a personal conviction to me, based on very intimate observation, despite critics.

1967- என்று நினைக்கிறேன். க.நா.சுப்பிரமணியம் தில்லிக்கு வந்து தங்கலானார். அப்போது ” பரோடாவிலிருந்து வெளிவரும் ENLITE என்னும் ஆங்கில வாரப்பத்திரிகையில் தமிழ் புத்தகங்களைப் பற்றி எழுதக் கேட்கிறார்கள். நீயும் எழுது” என்று என்னிடம் சொன்னார். “இங்கிலீஷ்லேன்னா எழுதணும்” என்று சொல்லித் தயங்கினேன். அவர் சிரிக்கவில்லை. “எல்லாம் எழுதலாம் எழுது.. நான் எழுதறதும் இங்கிலீஷ் தான். எல்லாரும் அவா அவாளுக்கு வர்ர இங்கிலீஷ்லே தான் எழுத முடியும். அமெரிக்கன் இங்கிலீஷ் வேறே இல்லையா? அதுவும் இங்கிலீஷ் தான்.: என்றார். சுந்தர ராமசாமியின் ஒரு புளிய மரத்தின் கதையைத் தான் நான் முதலில் எடுத்துக் கொண்டேன். அது பிரசுரமாயிற்று. அது சுந்தர ராமசாமி ஏழாண்டு மௌன தவத்தில் இருந்த காலம்.

அதன் பின் க.நா.சுப்பிரமணியம் தன்னிடம் ரெவ்யூவுக்காக வந்திருந்த புக் வெஞ்சர் புத்தகங்களைக் காட்டி இதெல்லாம் புதுசாக வந்தவை. இதில் எது படிக்கணும்னு தோன்றதோ அதைப் படிச்சுட்டு எழுது,” என்றார்.

அப்படி எழுதியவை தான், எம்.வி. வெங்கட் ராமின் வேள்வித் தீ, சி.சு. செல்லப்பாவின், வெள்ளை, வாடிவாசல், ஆர். ஷண்முக சுந்தரத்தின் மாயத் தாகம், பிரயாண இலக்கியம், ஜானகிராமனின் உதய சூரியன் எல்லாம். பின் Enlite பத்திரிகையுடன் தகராறு. (யாருடன் தான் தகராறு இருக்கவில்லை!) கையில் மிஞ்சிய அம்மா வந்தாள் நாவலைப் பற்றி எழுதி NATIONAL HERALD என்னும் தினசரி பத்திரிகைக்கு அனுப்பினேன். அது வெளிவந்த சமயம் ஜானகி ராமன் தில்லிக்கு மாற்றலாகி வந்திருந்தார். அதைப் பார்த்த ஜானகிராமன், “பெரிஸ்ஸா கொட்டை எழுத்தில் தலைப்பு போட்டு பாதி பக்கத்துக்கு போட்டிருக்கானே” என்று சந்தோஷப் பட்டார். நான் எழுதியதைப் படித்தவர் ஒன்றும் சொல்ல வில்லை. அது தான் சொல்வனத்திற்கு தமிழில் தரப்பட்டது. நேஷனல் ஹெரால்டு நேருவின் லக்னௌவில் தொடங்கிய பத்திரிகை. 1968-ல் அதன் ஆசிரியராக இருந்த சலபதி ராவ் அம்மா வந்தாள் ரெவ்யூ வைப் படித்துவிட்டு எனக்கு கடிதம் எழுதினார். இனி நீங்கள் ரெகுலராக நேஷனல் ஹெரால்டுக்கு எழுதலாம்” என்று. எனக்கு உச்சி குளிர்ந்து போயிற்று.[/stextbox]

குறிப்பு : இக்கடிதங்களும் இவை எழுதப்படக் காரணமான தீபம் கட்டுரையும் அன்றைய வறட்சியிலிருந்து இன்றைய முயற்சி வரை என்ற நாடகம் பற்றிய புத்தகத்தில் 25-லிருந்து 57-ம் வரை உள்ள பக்கங்களில் தமிழில் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளன.
